 Great speaker wire, properly marked, but the price fluctuates

I bought this wire a few days ago, despite some reviews saying there were no polarity markings, because 250′ of 12 gauge speaker wire for $40 is a great price. When it showed up I noticed, after a bit of squinting, that there was a “+” stamped on the insulation over one of the sides at one inch intervals. There was also another mark showing 1 foot intervals.

 Good Value with Caveats

I’ve used this brand of speaker wire in the past and it offers much appeal for the money. It should be noted, however, that this is NOT copper wire. It is copper-clad aluminum (CCA) which has less than 10% real copper. You can see the silvery aluminum core on the ends of the cut stands, and feel the light weight. Besides being very low-cost (compared to copper), CCA also has about 2 wire sizes HIGHER resistance than its equivalent gauge copper. So this 12 gauge CCA cable is equivalent to 14 gauge copper cable in electrical performance. I would not use this wire in critical applications, but it is ideal for modest audio applications.

Good cable for the price

This wire arrived in a well packaged box, and on the spool it shows. The wire seems to be the gauge implied, though maybe a little thinner as the cable is flattened slightly. I have only had a chance to run one speaker lead so far, and the quality is way better than that thin white wire they give you with your surround sound speakers. I expect 250 feet will be plenty to do my entire theater room. And at only about 40 dollars, I expected worse, but it’s a pretty good wire, and the + lead end is marked every once in a while on one of the wires, so polarity wiring will not be a problem. Also the blue looks great.
